  • Meet Megan Heil

I have dedicated my life to serving my community and strengthening families. With more than 20 years in law enforcement—including 13 years as a School Resource Officer—I’ve had the privilege of working alongside students, parents, and educators to create safe, supportive schools.

As a lifelong learner, I earned my Master of Science in Criminal Justice, and I continue to value education as the foundation for both personal growth and community strength. Today, I am a small business owner, a volunteer, and a proud conservative voice for Garfield RE-2. I am the only conservative Christian running for the school board, and I bring with me a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility, family partnership, and preparing students for future success.

In business, my husband and I bring new life to undervalued homes, refreshing neighborhoods, and providing greatly needed housing opportunities in the area. We are dedicated to keeping homeownership affordable.

Service has always been central to who I am. I have volunteered with many great organizations, including Garfield County Search and Rescue, the Advocate Safehouse, Special Olympics, and Girls on the Run, to name a few. I currently serve as an Associate Chaplain with the Colorado Department of Corrections. These experiences have strengthened my belief that communities thrive when people invest in one another.

With my background in public service, advanced education, business ownership, and community involvement, I am ready to bring steady leadership, common-sense values, and a heart for students to the Garfield RE-2 School Board.

    Why I’m Running

I am running for the Garfield RE-2 School Board because I believe strong schools are the foundation of strong communities. My years as a School Resource Officer showed me firsthand the challenges our students face and the incredible impact a supportive school environment can have on their futures.

I want every student in our district to be prepared for life beyond graduation—whether that means college, a career, or service to their community. To achieve that, I will prioritize student success, partner with families as the leading voices in education, and ensure that our district grows responsibly with fiscal accountability.

I am also running to ensure that conservative, common-sense values are represented on the school board. Families deserve transparency, educators deserve support, and students deserve the very best opportunities to succeed. I will work to ensure that Garfield RE-2 is a district where every child can thrive.

    Qualifications to Lead

I bring a proven record of leadership, service, and community involvement that makes me uniquely qualified to serve on the Garfield RE-2 School Board.

I earned my Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and have spent my career teaching others—from college students, to law enforcement officers, to school-aged children. Teaching and mentoring have given me a deep appreciation for the importance of equipping the next generation with the skills and values they need to succeed.

My leadership extends beyond the classroom. I have prior board experience serving on a special district board here in our community, and I have more than 15 years of experience as a small business owner in the area. Both my business and board experience have strengthened my understanding of budgeting, financial accountability, and long-term planning—skills that are essential for responsible decision-making in our schools.

As a School Resource Officer, I worked closely with the school board, administrators, teachers, staff, parents, students, and community partners. This unique role gave me firsthand knowledge of how schools operate, the challenges they face, and the importance of strong partnerships in creating safe and successful learning environments.

I also bring the perspective of a parent. I understand the issues facing families, and I know how vital education is to building strong communities. As a business owner, I see how well-prepared graduates strengthen the local workforce and the economy.

What sets me apart is that my experience spans both the big picture and the day-to-day. I’ve worked at the macro level—shaping policy, managing budgets, and guiding organizations—and at the micro level—directly with students, parents, and teachers. This combination of perspectives gives me a unique ability to understand challenges from every angle and make informed, balanced decisions. None of the other candidates bring this same depth of experience.

With my background in education, public service, business, and board leadership, I am the clear choice to help guide Garfield RE-2 toward a future of strong schools, strong families, and strong communities.

  • Some of My time in the Schools

As students were leaving for the day, Deputy Heil came across a car full of kids who needed help with a flat tire. Instead of just fixing it, she turned it into a quick lesson—teaching the students (and a few onlookers) how to change it themselves. One of those students later wrote her a thank-you note.
